“Rain outside? Culture inside.”
Let's face it: Dublin weather doesn't always stick to the plan. Luckily, the Hugh Lane Gallery is a brilliant excuse to duck indoors, escape the drizzle and discover something new, without spending a cent on general admission.
Located on Parnell Square North, near the top of O'Connell Street, this gallery is home to an impressive collection of Irish and international modern and contemporary art.
You'll find paintings, fascinating exhibitions and works by some seriously talented artists. One of the highlights is the reconstructed studio of Francis Bacon, offering a glimpse into the famously messy working world of the artist. It's definitely not your average artist's workspace!
Not sure where to start? Wander through the rooms, stop at whatever catches your eye and skip anything that doesn't. There's no right or wrong way to do a gallery.
The Hugh Lane also hosts exhibitions, talks, concerts and other events, so check what's on before visiting.
Budget traveller bonus: Free art, a dry place to hang out and something different to talk about back at the hostel. That's a win all round.
